Hello, I am Jeff Short and I am the Wood Manufacturing Instructor at Monroe County Area Technology Center. I have been teaching here since 2002 and have a Career and Technical Education degree from Western Kentucky University. I am also certified through the Woodwork Career Alliance of North America and have work experience that dates back to my teenage years. In all, I have over 30 years of experience in wood working including owning and operating a cabinet shop for over 13 years that specializes in custom cabinetry, stair treads, risers, balusters, fire place mantels, bathroom vanities, and trim work (standard and custom).
I offer courses that align with the Cabinet Maker and Furniture Maker Career Pathways. Those courses include Wood Product Manufacturing, Technical Drawing & Blueprint Reading, Wood Finishing, Furniture Technology, Cabinet Making Technology, and Advanced Wood Processing. I offer the Woodwork Career Alliance (WCA) certification to students who complete a pathway and demonstrate the competencies required.
I am a Co-Sponsor for the Skills USA CTSO. I also serve as the Head Coach for the Monroe County Falcon Anglers’ Fishing Team and am a member of the FLW Outdoors Fishing League. Other interests include fishing the BFL (Walmart: Bass Fishing League), boating year round, hunting, and spending time with my family and friends.
When I think of my favorite part of my job, a quote comes to mind, “Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one less traveled” …and that has made all the difference for me. I love inspiring kids to think and use their hands. I love the look on a kid’s face when they get it right. I also love the fact that I am handing down a trade that was handed down to me from someone else.
