Hello and welcome to my webpage. I am Melissa Smith, RN, BS Voc. Ed., and am the Health Sciences Instructor for the Monroe County Area Technology Center’s Satellite program located at Metcalfe County High School. I attended Western Kentucky University and became a Registered Nurse in 1993 and later received a Bachelor’s of Science in Vocational Education in 2006.
I have been a Health Sciences teacher since 1999 and, shortly thereafter, became the Advisor of HOSA, a CTSO for Future Health Care Professionals. Prior to teaching, I have 10 years of professional nursing experience in the healthcare industry.
I offer three career pathways: Pre-Nursing, Pharmacy Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician. Courses include Principles of Health Science, Medical Terminology/Emergency Procedures, Medicaid Nurse Aide, and Internships for Pharmacy Technician and Phlebotomy Technician. Students will be eligible to earn certifications as completers of a pathway. Those certifications include the State Registered Nurse Aide (SRNA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), and/or Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).
I am married to Scot and we have four children: Veronica, a Bio-Chem Major at WKU; Braxton, a Bio Major at UK; and Selexa and Braydon, who are in middle school. My hobbies/interests include being a Zumba Instructor, Cheerleading Coach, and Prom Coordinator.
Earning a health care certification and getting real jobs has a profoundly positive effect on our students. It truly changes their lives and helps them to become confident, productive members of our community.
